The key functionality on the site is found in the left side menu bar. It is designed to allow multiple ways to retrieve the select data. Each part of the menu allows the searcher to return the most accurate results with the minimum input possible. Understanding the differences in each part of the menu will greatly improve accurate results, so below is a quick description of each item in the menu.

To start searching right away, use the Quick Search feature in the upper left corner of the screen. You can enter a search term and click the "Search" button for fast general searching. The Quick Search feature searches across all data resources, with the exception of Patent Information.

Knowledge Express provides the ability to construct different kinds of searches using the pull down menu in Quick Search:

Match All Words requires all the terms you submit to be included in the search result records.

Match Any Words will return records with any of the available terms included.

Boolean Search lets you use standard Boolean logic operators including AND, OR, AND NOT, and NEAR.

Free Text Search will return records that match the meaning or variations on the terms, but not the exact phrases submitted. The free-text query engine examines the text, identifies all the significant words and noun phrases, and internally constructs a query with those terms.

An Exact Phrase Search will return results containing only the terms submitted and in the order they were constructed.

Using an asterisk (*) after the first few letters of a word will find records containing words beginning as you have specified. For instance, typing tumo* will find: tumor, tumour, tumorous, tumours, etc.

The Category Search allows you to search across one or more defined categories by selecting the included check boxes.

The Categories consist of:

Technologies: Listing of products and technologies available for licensing or development.

Profiles: Detailed company listings from around the world,

Intelligence: News, market information archives, benchmarking data and industry insight.

Development: Clinical trials, FDA approvals and product pipeline details.

Patents: U.S., WIPO / PCT, and European patent listings are also separated into their own search category below the Resource Search menu category.

This search also has the added functionality of allowing you to construct different kinds of searches using the pull down menu. Mailing lists can only be created from databases in the Profiles Category.

The resource names (product names like CorpTech, KE Agreements, US Patents) on the left side of the screen are clickable. They allow searching those resources individually, with the added options of searching specifically by date, company name, industry category, etc.

Many of the smaller resources can also be browsed. If it is available on the specific resource, this functionality appears at the bottom of the individual search page.

The Patent Search allows you to select specific areas of our patent resources to search. Because of the size of our patent resources, we have separated out the patent resources for faster results.

Use Custom Search to select a particular set of data resources to simultaneously search. You may find this option useful for searching across a specific set of resources such as Grants, NTIS Gov Database and Corptech.

There are other tools on the site to help in searching, downloading, or staying up to date on the latest resources available.

Throughout the site you will find question marks like this:    

Clicking on a question mark will open a new small window with additional information on the nearby item.

1. Perform a search exclusively on profile resources. There are several ways to do this:
   1. Under Category Search select Profiles
   2. Under Custom Search select one or more profile resource.
   3. Use Resource Search to search an individual profile resource.
2. Click the Mailing List button that appears above the search results
3. The mailing list presents three companies per page. To move between pages, click on the Previous and Next buttons at the records listed in the current mailing list. At the top of the page, you can refine your list by filtering the companies employees by their titles.
4. Once the list is complete, you add the name for your document and the format (.doc, .xls, .txt, .csv) you wish to download the file to your computer.

1. Perform a search that includes profile resources.
2. Select the desired records by clicking on the Cart boxes in the left most column of the search results. Go to View Cart at the top of the page. Once there you can select Mailing List and continue to step 3 above.
